Saturday Take the morning train to London from your local station, and on arrival make your way to your chosen hotel. Hotel check–in time is normally around 3 p.m. but if you arrive before your room is ready you will be able to leave your luggage with the concierge and complete the check–in formalities later on. Then it's time to go out and explore this exciting capital city!

Sunday After a princely full English breakfast make your way to Buckingham Palace for your morning visit (there are several tube stations and routes, but Westminster and Birdcage Walk by St James' Park is a particularly nice way to go). You can hardly miss the Palace. It's awe–inspiring even before you've gone through the gates, but once you're inside it's huge – there are carpets as big as cricket fields, state rooms the size of bus depots, and lofty vaulted corridors dripping with Holbeins and Van Dykes. In Queen Victoria's time it was a family house, and a happy one too, full of songs and parties, but after Albert died Victoria shuttered herself and the Palace away in sorrow and perpetual mourning. At last, in 1901, Edward VII and his fashionable Marlborough Set brought joie de vivre back to Buckingham Palace, and he had the whole place done out in the latest Belle époque colours; gold, cream, and a riot of reds and pinks. These colours are still in favour today, and it remains the ultimate show home and an amazing place to visit. In the year of the Queen's 90th birthday there will be a special exhibition titled 'Fashioning a Reign' charting significant events in The Queen's life and the nation's history through an unprecedented collection of dress, jewellery and accessories. You'll have plenty of time to look around the Palace and explore the souvenir shop. After the visit, your day is at leisure in London until it's time to make your way to the station for your train home in the afternoon.
