Lasers, neon, light bulbs, fibre optics, searchlights, floodlighting, they call this ‘the greatest lightshow on Earth’ and it’s reputedly visible from space. In 2012 there were more than 500 scenic designs and features, daisy-chained in festoons across six miles of the sea-front.

There are illuminated scenes in 3D. Objects and characters move and dance in winking points of light. Landmarks like the Tower and the Pleasure Beach are picked out in luminous detail, the hotels are floodlit in iridescent washes, and even the trams are illuminated. Wonderland at the flick of a switch...

With a visit to Chester and the home of spring water at Buxton, plus travel, 4 star accommodation, dinner and English breakfast, this Omega break should make anyone’s face light up.

Day 1: From a morning pick-up in your local area we head by coach for an afternoon in Chester. This is one of the best preserved walled cities in Britain, with medieval black and white wattle and daub buildings, a neo-Gothic town hall, a Norman castle with museum, a Norman cathedral, the Eastgate Clock which is said to be the most photographed clock in Britain after Big Ben, and The Rows, containing unique crypt-like shops set below street level. There are Roman remains in many places, the Roman Gardens with displays of artifacts, and the Dewa Roman Experience has hands-on exhibits and a reconstructed Roman street. And of course, there are all the great shops, bars and cafés you’d expect in a major city. In the afternoon we rejoin the coach and make our way to the 4 star Thistle Haydock Hotel for dinner and the first of two nights stay.

Day 2: After a full English breakfast it’s off to Blackpool for a day on the Golden Mile, up the Tower, along the piers, or down the Pleasure Beach. There’s a Sea Life Centre here, a circus, Madame Tussauds, a waterpark, a zoo, a model village, and of course miles of sea and sand, not to mention all those cheap eateries and kitsch souvenir shops you know you shouldn’t love. And then, when the sun sets behind the western sea and the dusk draws in, on come the Illuminations and we board the coach for a journey through electric fairyland. Later in the evening we return to the hotel for the second night’s stay.

Day 3: Breakfast and then home today, but not before a small diversion to one of the most scenic areas in the country, Buxton in the Peak District, the highest market town in England and a Georgian spa from stem to stern. Think Bath with altitude. In fact Buxton’s Crescent is modelled on Bath’s. The Opera House was built by the designer responsible for the London Palladium, while the railway station was a child of Joseph Paxton who built the Crystal Palace. The Devonshire Dome, home to a café quarter and a fine spa, is bigger than St Paul’s Cathedral, St Peter’s and the Pantheon in Rome, and was the world’s largest until 1992. There’s also a Pavilion and Gardens, a Winter Gardens and lots of galleries and boutiques. And by the way, if you want a drink of fresh spring water go right ahead, you can fill your boots and your bottles from the permanent flow at St Anne’s Well in front of the Crescent. We’ll rejoin the coach for home in the afternoon.

This break is a day trip and therefore does not use a hotel
